Anyone know where to get M203 Forgings or 80%?
« on: August 21, 2008, 11:01:34 AM »
Was interested for sometime in the M203. I would like to make one in 37mm as here in my state I cannot own an actual 40mm.  I know the blueprints are out there, but where would one find a source for the raw forging or an 80%?

doubt there are any. very small market, plus the 37mm M203 copy "flare launchers" are not considered firearms so "80%" has even less meaning than with a real frame. you could buy or borrow a 37mm launcher and reverse-engineer it if you just really want to build one yourself.
if you mean you're looking for a true M203 in some sort of unfinished condition, i bet they are very rare. again, tiny commercial market if any.
but i'd be happy to hear of it if you do find some!

being that they are not regulated AT ALL, i doubt theres any market for a partially finished one.

id try to find some prints and build it from a billet, or make a casting if you can.

I think Ohio Rapid Fire is making real ones, but I agree there is no market for a partial flare launcher.
Now a XM148 flare launcher would have a good market with the retro guys. ;D

I just visited this fellow www.mr40mm.com at his shop here in Elyria and he is, in fact, building M203s and M79s.  He had a stack.  More interestingly he also designs and makes 40mm "rounds" that adapt the 203 and 79 to shoot 12ga and multiple .22lr rounds (like 19 of them) at a time.  Nice guy, too.

I've met Mr. 40mm on several occasions, Randy I think it is?
Very nice and knowledgeable.
At the Knob a few weeks ago the guy who has a table next to us had a M79 receiver incomplete and it was several grand.  Sorry I don't remember how much.
On the flip side, at the Sharonville Ohio show last month I met a 37mm flare gun salesman who was talking out of both sides of his mouth.  If you are interested in it a lot and can make it to that show you can track him down I am sure.
The multi 22 shot cartridges and 12 gauge that he had looked like they were made out of some cold roll steel or 4140 if memory serves.  Fairly basic design for the 12 if you have a lathe.  The 22 would require a lathe and a mill with some moderate mathematic skills or a Prototrak/Anilam (sp?) type system.

Remember the rules here.

The .22 and 12g inserts, if made in 37mm, make that flare launcher a felony.

Yes, Randy's website states they are only available for the 40mm.
