Convert upper to straight pull side charger
« on: September 23, 2016, 05:32:31 AM »
I want to convert one of my AR uppers to a side charger for hunting use. The plan was to mimic something like the one in the photo below.

The plan was to:
1. Mill off a part of the upper strarting from the ejection port opening to the beginning of the forward assist.
2. Drill and tap the bolt carrier with two 1/4"-28 screws
3. Make a handle
4. Remove the gas tube from the upper and put on a sleeve to close the gas port.

Does anybody know the hardness of the bolt carrier? Will it be difficult to drill and tap it, and will I be able to use the converted bolt carrier again in one of my semi auto uppers?

Once you break the skin.....bolt carriers pose no major issue to drill and tap....just use carbide to spot and drill...HSS spiral point taps will thread
