Need a part made... can anyone help?
« on: April 25, 2012, 03:53:33 PM »
Sorry to sound like a noob on this board, but I have a project that I need a part made for and this looks like the perfect place to find someone ready to accept the challenge!

I have a rifle and a mount that I am trying to get to work together…

Here is the rifle:

Here is the stock:
http://shop.nordiccomp.com/NC-Compact-Retractable-Butt-Stock-STK-CRS-BRS.htm

The Nordic stock was originally designed for an AR-15 chambered in .22. It just happens that this particular receiver does not have the normal internal threading for the stock. Instead it has an adapter for the folding mechanism. The end plate sized of both stocks are the same; it’s just a question of a spacer between the receiver and the new stock.

I took a bunch of pictures you can check out here:

Is this something you think you can handle? Could you give me a price estimate?

Thanks! Dan

That looks interesting, I wish I was not so busy right now!

Material cost would be really low compared to design/machining costs. If I was going to do it I would want a RRA PDS receiver and  one of those stocks to take measurements from and check fit.

Good luck!

easiest remedy would be to drill and tap the lower like a standard AR... but maybe you don't want to alter it.

seems like an adapter block (or even a short piece of tubing) w/ internal 1 3/16" threads and a front face like the existing folding adapter would be pretty simple to make...

You are talking about the floor plates in the bottom of the magazines, correct? IF  THAT IS CORRECT........are you "coding" manually? A typical floor plate would be programmed in less than 30 minutes using Mastercam- not to mention 2 set up's in the VMC/HMC and a first article ran in no more than two hours.....or you would not have a job in our shop.  How do I know this? I do it everyday and have been for years..........including machining some custom floorplates in a past lifetime. I don't know how you could possibly rack up 31.5 hours for 4 floorplates.  Another way to cut cost - would have been cheaper to send the parts to ano - way less than $120.  Also - associating the $50 cost of the cutter to 4 floorplates is misleading - you can use that cutter to make a thousand floor plates, so the cost per plate is miniscule.

To the OP - don't be scared off by that huge number - it is grossly misleading - you just need to find a competent shop that sends parts to ano on a regular basis and is into firearms - not that hard, really.

I just re-read my post - wow, I sound like an a-hole ;)  Did not mean to come off that way on my first post - I apologize.  I still stand by my comments, but should have worded it differently.

After investigating some of your past posts, I can see why it takes so long............you are using a Bridgeport with a homemade control - very slow, no matter how you slice it.  And coding manually?  Are you crazy? (get BobCad for less than $1000 - would work fine for what you are doing) Taking 12 hours?  You clearly have never worked as a machinist where making money was your first goal - and if you were to take your numbers to a REAL machine shop, they'd laugh you right out of the building.  Your numbers are absolutely ridiculous.

And yes, it IS easy for ME to critcize - I have the experience and knowledge to back it up - the numbers I told you that it would take for my shop to make those floorplates are dead on - and if you can't do it in that time, you will be looking for a new job soon.  Setups and machining parts of this nature in the time I told you happens every day - just not in your hobby shop.

You have a great day! :)

go lay by your dish...........and then tell someone who cares about how great you are.  The fact that you won't say what you "estimate" says what a nut job you are.  Last word.

guys, as amusing as this exchange is (and big surprise that tlagnhoj is involved... who could have predicted that?), i'm not sure how it is helping the OP in any way.
he needs an exceedingly simple one-off part made. i'm sure he wasn't asking for this kind of internet weenis-flexing contest.

on the other hand, he joined, posted his query a few minutes later, and hasn't been back since. so i guess it doesn't really matter anyway.
have at each other, as long as the mods are OK with it   ::)
